For the second year in a row, Appleyards has been named as one of the Sunday Times Best 100 Small Companies to Work For.

The Sunday Times’ annual list recognises companies that achieve the highest standards of workplace practice and employee engagement and motivation.

More than 500 companies sought a place in the prestigious list, a 50% rise on last year. Richard Caseby, managing editor of the Sunday Times, wrote: "In spite of the challenges facing all companies — big or small — this year, competition for a place in this supplement has intensified again."

Winners are determined via a survey of companies’ staff, with more than 34,000 employees contributing to the 2009 poll, making it the most comprehensive study of workplace opinion of its kind.

Appleyards was recognised for its commitment to helping employees get the most out of their jobs and develop their careers. The Sunday Times wrote: "Jobs [at Appleyards] are excellent for personal growth, and there is no limit to how much employees can learn and grow. There are whole-company training and development days, and professional coaching from external experts. The firm sponsors staff in taking qualifications, and has its own bespoke leadership development programme. Employees say this is of great benefit to them personally."
