Telling the story of the Royal Navy and its people in the 20th and 21st Centuries
Appleyards has recently been appointed to Project Manage this prestigious project to tell the story of the modern Royal Navy. The exhibition will be housed in the Grade 1 listed Storehouse No.10 in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard a stone’s throw away from the HMS Victory and the new Mary Rose Museum due to be completed in 2012.
Due to open in 2014, the new exhibition will be an immersive, experiential and object rich environment which will engage visitors with the history of the Royal Navy in the 20th century. It will convey a challenging story of the Navy’s continued international reach and global influence through periods of conflict and peace and rapid technological and social change, through the experiences, triumphs, achievements and sacrifice of its servicemen and women.
Appleyards will project manage the renovation of the ground floor of Storehouse 10, built in 1776, and the design and fit-out of 500m² high class flexible exhibition space (including a Special Exhibitions Gallery). The main items of repair and renovation work included in this project will be the treatment of the inner faces of brick walls to the ground floor areas, and the preservation and strengthening of the structural timbers and flooring. The building will also be improved and made suitable for use as museum galleries by the provision of passive fire protection to the underside of the first floor, the lining of walls to the ground floor galleries, provision of toilets, heating, ventilation, electrical installations and mechanical services. A new glazed link will also be provided between No. 10 Storehouse and No.11 Storehouse which the museum also occupies.
Additionally, Appleyards will deliver a wide programme of learning and community engagement activities related to the new galleries.
