Refurbishment of a Professional Development Centre within a Primary School. The centre provides a training venue for education sector professionals. Construction of a four storey extension to an existing school building, refurbishment of the third floor and roof of the existing building, new lift and associated works, replacement of existing windows and the removal of temporary buildings.

Addressing Key Challenges

• Works in an occupied site. The existing school was to remain in use throughout all stages of the project as it was not possible to provide education for the students elsewhere. Accordingly, it was essential to ensure safety of students and staff during the construction stage. This involved careful planning of phases and segregation from construction.
• Restricted access and limited space for contractor’s compound and storage.
• Careful access arrangements for deliveries and control of vehicle movements.
• Maintaining emergency escape routes to occupied buildings whilst still allowing works to progress.
• Presence of deleterious materials in existing construction.
• Maintaining ‘live’ services for the duration for the contract.
• Demolition/strip out at controlled times.
• Programming works to utilise school holiday periods.
